Hall of Fame Professional Basketball Coach. As head coach of the Detroit Pistons from 1983 to 1992, he guided them to two consecutive NBA Championship titles (1989, 1990). He coached the 1992 Men's Olympic Basketball Team known as "The Dream Team", which featured such star players as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing to the gold medal. Born Charles Jerome Daly, he attended St. Callistus Catholic School and played collegiate basketball at St. Bonaventure and Bloomsburg Universities. After coaching at Punxsutawney High School, he served as assistant coach at Duke University and as head coach at Boston College and the University of Pennsylvania. While at Penn, he guided the Quakers to four consecutive Ivy League titles (1972 to 1975). In 1978, Daly reached the professional level as an assistant on Billy Cunningham's staff with the Philadelphia 76ers. Daly's other NBA head coaching stints include the Cleveland Cavaliers (1981 to 1982), New Jersey Nets (1992 to 1994) and Orlando Magic (1997 to 1999). He compiled a regular season record of 638 win and 437 losses. His post season record is 75 wins and 51 losses. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994, and was named as one of the NBA's 10 Greatest Coaches in 1996. In addition, he worked as a color-analyst for NBA games. He died following a lengthy battle with cancer.
