Ellen's father, Richard L. Metcalfe, was the first civil governor of the Panama Canal Zone (appointed by Woodrow Wilson). A one-time mayor of Omaha, he also ran for the Senate twice, lost a bid for governor, and apparently was on the "short list" as a running mate for one of Roosevelt's runs. He was a friend and cohort of William Jennings Bryan (they published "The Commoner" together in the early 1900's), and was also editor of the Omaha World Herald.

1st husband, Silas R. Barton, was a congressman from Grand Island who died the night before his possible election to a second term.

2nd husband, Harley Conant, was a well-known hotel proprietor in Omaha, NE in the 1900's -- one of the hotels still exists, and is on the Nat'l Register of Historic Places.

Son Silas, Jr died in 1964 at age 50 and, is also buried at Forest Lawn, with Ellen's family, the Richard Metcalfes. Both families are located in Section 21 of Forest Lawn; Ellen in plot 348, and son Silas Barton in plot 255.

Taken at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Omaha, NE, 3-21-2012

Buried here are Mary Helen Batterson Conant, husband George Calvin, and children/spouses: Elsie Conant/William Giller, Harley Conant/Ellen Metcalfe, Calvin Conant and Homer Conant. Daughters Ethel (Harwood) & Grace (Rogers) were cremated.
