Son of Samuel W. Hendrix and Mary Elizabeth Neville. He was called "Dick" by friends. He married Nancy Adeline Blue in Sangamon County, Illinois, January 2, 1866. She was the daughter of Robert Blue and Martha Blue (cousins).

They were farmers. In 1880 they were living in Austin, Macon, Illinois, and by 1900 they were living in Lexington where they remained.

They had the following children:

The following is from an obituary in the DAWSON COUNTY PIONEER newspaper; June 11, 1910:

"The deceased was one of the early settlers of Dawson county (NE), and one of the best known and well-liked men in the county. He settled on a farm about ten miles east of Lexington, later moved into Overton and finally to Lexington a few months ago. He leaves a wife and several children: Elmer Hendrix of Soux City IA; Mrs. Katie Gordon and Mrs. Brazil Gordon of fort Collins CO [Hiram Brazil Gordon was the son of Katie (Hendrix) Gordon, and the grandson of Hiram Hendrix. His wife, Mrs. Brazil Gordon was Gertrude Dodge, daughter of William Morgan Oliver Dodge and Mary Isabelle Cole] ; Mrs. George Wildt, Mrs. Jeff and Houston Adams of Overton; Mrs. Paul Naviaux, and Mrs. Ed Morgan of Lexington; John and Alvie Hendrix of Eddyville. H.B. Hendrix, a brother of Springfield; Mrs. Rena Freeman, a sister of Springfield IL, and Mrs. Blance Rensler, a niece, of Aurora IL were present previous to his death and at the funeral, as were also his sons-in-law George Wildt, Jef and Huston Adams and his children before mentioned. The remains were interred in Greenwood cemetery.

"H.A. Hendrix or Uncle Dick as he was known to most of his friends died on Monday May 30th 1910. He was one of the early settlers of Dawson county. Mr. Hendrix was a man of particularly amiable disposition. He settled on a farm about 10 miles northeast of this city but later on moved to Overton and a few months ago moved to this city.
