Eastern Orthodox Saint. She married the Byzantine Emperor Leo VI in approximately 883 AD, but the marriage was not a success and Leo later took a mistress. She became Empress when Leo succeeded to the throne in 886 AD, and, as an educated and deeply religious woman, devoted much of her time to prayer, psalms and hymns. She is believed to have built the monastery of St. Anastasia the Protector from Potions on Halki Island near Constantinople. In 893 AD she retired to a monastery at Constantinople, where she died in 897 AD. Her piety led to her being sanctified by the Eastern Orthodox Church, her feast day is on 16th December.
