Samuel Robert "Sam" Agnew, 84, was one of the early settlers and coal miners of Newcastle, Texas. Services were held at Arnett Benson Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Windell Taylor, the pastor and assisted by Rev. Lynn Wilson, the pastor of Southside Baptist Church in Olney, Texas. The Agnew family was one of the early settlers of Young County, Texas. Moving there in 1906 and then to Newcastle in 1908, where they lived until 1918. Mr. Agnew was employed in the coal mines in the Newcastle Coal mines. He had been living with a daughter who maintained homes in Newcastle and Portales, New Mexico. Mr. Agnew was one of the few survivors of the coal mining days in Newcastle. Survived by nine daughters - Mrs. Lloyd Dopson, Mrs. H.W. Brock, Mrs. Q.T. McDonnell. Mrs. H.G, McDonnell, Mrs. C.L. Largent, Mrs. Allen Price, Mrs. Raymond Goodrum, Mrs. Richard Green, Mrs. Imogene Pierce; two sons - Walter Agnew and Kenneth Agnew. Contributor: Searchers of our Past (47220553)
