George was born about 1843, according to his Union Army Pension Application papers, to the union of Soloman Mitchell (1828-1857) and Sarah Gooch (1825-1877).
He grew up in Gibson Co. leaving to serve his country as a Union soldier in the Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.

He married 1) 1867 Jemmima E. Allmon (1848-1878)
children: William, Ora, and Elza Mitchell
married 2) 1879 Margaret Catherine Parkhill (1857-1941)
children: Oscar, Adelle, George M., John K., Rosco, and David

He passed away in March 1895 in Eldorado, Saline Co., Illinois.
Family tale is he was buried in a coffin with a glass viewing lid.
