Blues Musician. One of ten children born to sharecroppers, he spent the first seven years of his life on a plantation in Dunleath, Mississippi. He learned guitar from Eddie Taylor, the man who helped raise him. Reed's wife, Mary Lee "Mama" Davis, wrote many of his songs. He suffered from severe epilepsy which caused him crippling attacks. His bouts with the disease, however, rarely sidelined him for long. He toured Europe in the 1960s and in the early 1970s, he headlined blues clubs from California to Georgia. He died in his sleep from respiratory failure brought on by a massive seizure. In 1980, he was posthumously inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. In 1992, Reed was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by ZZ Top.
