Daughter of John T. Monnett and Isabella Miller Monnett. John T. Monnett left his pregnant wife after less than a week of marriage, leaving Emma to be raised in her mothers home her entire childhood. Emma's mother divorced Emma's father shortly after Emma was born. Even after her father returned to Marion, he never acknowledged her in public. His family finally acknowledged her in 1910 after her birth father died. Emma married Thomas Kennedy - four children. The couple divorced in Kansas in 1913. Emma operated a "racket store" (aka, dimestore) in Medicine Hat, Kansas, for a decade before selling the business and becoming a seamstress and fine needlework for clients in Wichita. She died at her home in Wichita in December 1953.
Above all things, no matter what confronted her in life, Emma persevered and succeeded.
