Second son of Johannes Flickinger who came from Switzerland in 1729 and settled in Lancaster County, PA. Joseph was born in Lancaster County about 1740. Date is per Robert A. Flickinger in his "The Flickinger Family History"published in 1927. Robert also thought that Joseph came from Switzerland and that his father was Hans Flukiger and mother Lucia Reinhart, who were both dead at the time of Joseph's birth. Robert also connected Joseph with Johannes, but he didn't know that there 2 Johannes' that emigrated together, father (1700 - 1779) and son (1728 - 1787). Other genealogists got the two confused as one, but Family Search recognized that they were 2 people. Of course, Hans is the nickname for Johannes, so Joseph's father was Hans, son of Hans Jacob Flukiger and Lucia Reinhart, but his mother was Anna Ammann. The younger Johannes is Joseph's brother and they all settled in and around Cocalico. A third brother Heinrich was born in 1743, died 1783.

Joseph married Ehster in about 1757-8 and had 5 children before purchasing land in Cocalico, Lancaster, PA on Nov 15, 1763. He donated a piece of his land to build a shared Mennonite, German Reform Church with a graveyard behind. He served in the Lancaster Co Militia under Capts Joseph Gehr, Andrew Ream, and Col. John Huber with his sons Christian and John. His DAR patriot number is A039619. On Sept 7, 1793, Joseph retired from farming and conveyed his 243.5 acre property in Cocalico to son Joseph and his 216 acres of land in Peters Twp, Franklin Co to son John. He must have gone to spend his final days with John in Franklin County.
