Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. When the Civil War broke out, Newport joined the army as assistant quartermaster. By the end of the war, he rose in the quartermaster's department from colonel to chief quartermaster of the Baltimore depot. On March 13, 1865, he received the brevet brigadier general commission "for faithful and meritorious services during the war." After the war he was a banker, real estate agent, and railroad executive.
