US Congressman. Moving to New York City, New York in 1849, he engaged in the drug business and was highly prosperous as a patent medicine manufacturer in 1853. He then crossed the United States in a wagon and studied the mineral resources of Colorado, Nevada and California. Returning to New York City, he wrote published articles concerning his experiences was one of the first to request private die stamps which were authorized and the first three Barnes stamps were approved by the Commissioner of Internal Revenue in September 1862. In 1867, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fortieth Congress, serving until 1869. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he established and edited the Brooklyn Argus newspaper in 1873. He also was a member of the board of education, one of the original trustees of the Brooklyn Bridge and engaged in the real-estate business, until his death at age 61.
