Army Spc O'Neill was assigned to the 549th MP Company, 385th MP BN, 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne), Fort Stewart, Georgia. He was severely injured on June 2, 2009 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle at Paktya, Afghanistan followed by small arms fire.

He passed away June 15, 2009 at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas from those injuries. Jonathan was a 2004 graduate of Zephyrhills High School in Zephyrhills, Florida where he was in the junior ROTC. After graduation, he worked at several stores but realized he wanted to do more and see more than where he was raised. He was also considering work in law enforcement and thought joining the Army's Military Police was the best way to get training. In January 2007, Jonathan began down the path he thought would better his life - joining the Army. He had been deployed for 15 months when he was injured and was presented the Purple Heart and the Presidential Coin on June 4, 2009 at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany. He will be posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Jonathan was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Tampa Bay Lightning and Rays but WWE wrestling star John Cena was his favorite. He was an even-tempered, selfless person who always stood up for those he loved. His was the voice of reason among friends who enjoyed playing pranks and getting into mischief. Just weeks before his death, he gave his countdown regarding the war: "Thought the war was over. Guess it's not over til I come home". Jonathan's final Facebook entry on May 29 said: "Jonathan O'Neill is heading back out, just about 3 weeks and I'll be back on and starting the process of coming home."
