While the ship was moored at Pier 8-A, Cristobal, Canal Zone, he was attempting to get into a hammock that was stretched over Hatch 5. He accidentally fell through the open hatch to the bottom, a distance of 35 feet and died a few hours later at Margarita Hospital, Margarita, Canal Zone.
