Doris was the daughter (and oldest child) of Lena Augusta Mathias and Herman Blohme. She was the sister of Charles Herman and Edythe Caroline Blohme, half-sister of Jeremiah Paul Lenihan. Mother grew up in Brooklyn, NY and shared with us many of her happy memories of having lived there.
During World War II, she worked at the Sperry Gyroscope Plant and in May of 1944, at the age of 22, she enlisted in the U. S. Army (WACs) as a Laboratory Technician and was stationed at Ft. Baker near San Francisco, California. It was there at the base infirmary where she met my father, Archie Hodges, who was stationed across San Francisco Bay at Ft. Scott. He had been rushed there to have his appendix removed and she was the technician who did all his blood-work. When he was able to be up and about, they spent a lot of time walking across the Golden Gate Bridge from Ft. Baker to Fort Scott.
They met on the 13th of September 1944; he proposed to her six days later; and she accepted the next day....just one week after they met! They were married just 10 WEEKS later! Their love survived 41 wonderful years and was still going strong when my Dad passed away in 1985.
Mother was extremely talented and there isn't anyone in our family who doesn't have some sort of craft item that she made for them. She was very skilled in crocheting, knitting, cross-stitch, embroidery, quilting, ceramics, and sewing just to name a few. Though she never entered any of her craft work in any local County Fairs, it is obvious just looking at her work that she would definitely have taken First Place!!
She was the loving mother of Priscilla and Wayne; adoring grandmother of George Leland "Lee", Scott Douglas, Cynthia Michelle and Heatherly Dawn; and blessed great-grandmother of Scott Jr., Aiza, Randy, Angelica, April, Benjamin, Kaydee, Jacob, Sara,and Aiyah (and would have been the great-grandmother of Zackary and great-great grandmother of Zayna and Benjamin, Jr.)
Mother was bedridden for the last four or five years of her life and Wayne and I were blessed to have been able to be her caregivers here at home. Her health began failing severely in the latter part of June 2007 and the doctors told us that she had a week to ten days to live and suggested that she be moved to the Hospice House since she needed morphine for her pain and they couldn't allow her to have it at home. She was admitted and there was always a member of the famiy with her 24/7 for the next 22 days. Wayne, Jean (our self-adopted sister) and I were there holding her hand as she passed away while listening to a CD of her favorite hymn, Amazing Grace.
This best describes our last day together........
God knew that you were tired
A cure was not to be,
He put His arms around you
As said please come to me.
I watched you, tears in my eyes
As you slowly passed away,
I wanted to keep you with me
Yet knew you could not stay.
A beautiful heart stopped beating
At last you were at rest,
I guess God had to prove to me
He only takes the best.
No one could ever take your place
If I live a million years,
Each night your name is on my lips
My eyes still full of tears.
I know that you're in Heaven, Mom,
As I search the sky above,
Sending you a silent message
From a heart that's full of love.

Mother was cremated, and her wishes were to have her ashes taken back to Fairbury, NE to be buried beside her husband, Archie Hodges, with whom she shares the same headstone, and we shall be doing this soon.
She was greatly loved and is sadly missed by all her family and friends!
