Olympic Gold Medal Winner. He participated on the English team to take the 4 X 400-meter relay at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Raised in Greenwich, he was educated at the Royal Military Academy, where he began competitive running. He was coached by Walter George, a famed miler from the 1800s. After winning the 880-yard event in the 1930 Army games, he concentrated on relay races and joined the British team for the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. After helping win a Silver Medal in the 4 X 400 event, his training was limited by his duties in the Royal Artillery; still, he managed to capture two Gold Medals in the 1934 British Empire Games (in the individual 440-yard and the 4 X 440 relay). In 1936, he traveled to Berlin for what was to have been German dictator Adolph Hitler's "showcase." Although American Jesse Owens received publicity in 1936, Rampling's team won the 4 X 400 Gold for England. After 1936, Rampling devoted himself to his Royal Army career. He retired after 29 years of service in 1958 and settled in Hertfordshire, where he was a noted golfer. At his death, he was the last male competitor from the 1932 Games and the last Gold Medalist from 1936. His daughter is actress Charlotte Rampling.
