Beloved Citizen Gone: Mr. James H.Alley, eighty four years of age, a beloved and highly esteemed citizen, passed away at ten o'clock Sunday night, Apr.29,1917, surrounded by members of his family. Following a severe cold and a spell of lagrippe from which he suffered last fall, he had been in failing health for several months, but had only been confined to his home and bed about a month when the end came. The funeral services were solemnized on Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the family residence, and the remains were followed to their last resting place in the Forrest City Cemetery by a large concourse of friends, Rev.J.F.E.Bates officiating. Deceased was a native of Alabama, and was born at Madison in that state, Jan.9,1833. In early boyhood he removed to Marshall Co., Miss., making their home near the Marsahll institute. In 1860 he was married to to Miss Ophelia McCombs, of Red Banks, Miss., and their union was blessed with four children, viz:Dr.W.H.Alley, Jr., James L.Alley, Mrs. Eva (E.M.)Cherry of Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. Pearl (A.J.) Vaccaro, all of whom with their mother survive. Deceased served in the Confederate army as a member of Co.F-2nd Kentucky Cavalry, under Capt.Tom Weber, Col. Bassil Duke, and General John Morgan, and his valor and courage thoughout that memorable struggle will remain as a heritage of honor to those of his blood whom he has left behind. The deceased has long been a citizen of St.Francis county and Forrest City, having removed here with his family thirty four years ago from Byhalia, Miss. Peace to his ashes.
