James M Ricketts was the son of Joshua Ricketts, a native of Virginia, and Elizabeth Jackson, a native of Ohio. James was one of eight children: Margaret, Sarah Elizabeth, Lavinia, James M, Mary Melvina, Justis, Jacob Jackson and Catherine Matilda Ricketts. James was raised on his parents' farms in Perry County, Ohio and Van Buren and Davis Counties, Iowa.

James married Mary E ( ) Holmes June 30, 1870 in Van Burne County, Iowa. Mary had been previously married and had two daughters, Cornelia and Mary Ella Holmes. James and Mary were the parents of Charles Ricketts and Laura A Ricketts who were born in Van Buren County, Iowa. James, when a young single man, had taught school in Davis County, Iowa. He farmed in Van Buren County, moving to Henry County, Iowa by 1900. James was a Civil War veteran having served in Company G of the Third Iowa Cavalry with the rank of private, his allegiance Union Army.
