Connecticut First Lady. She had been married to Raymond E. Baldwin for 16 years when he was first elected governor in 1938. A 1914 graduate of Middletown High School, she taught commercial courses for two years before attending the Connecticut College for Women in New London. She graduated with honors as a Winthrop Scholar in 1916. She returned to teaching and married her husband in 1922 when he was an attorney in New Haven. Having lived in New Haven and Bridgeport, the couple called Stratford home when Mr. Baldwin launched his political career. During her husband's years as governor, Mrs. Baldwin chaired the state committee on the sale of war savings bonds in schools of the state. For her efforts she was awarded the Connecticut Medal for Distinguished Public Service by the Connecticut War Council. She was also active in furnishing and hosting open houses at the Governor's Mansion on Prospect Street in Hartford, with the state having purchased the property during Gov. Baldwin's administration. After her husband's years in Washington, they settled in Stratford. They later moved to Glastonbury and then Middletown, where Mrs. Baldwin spent the last four years of her life. She was survived by her husband, three sons and 13 grandchildren.
