Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Trained as a physician, Hollis practiced medicine in his native state of Indiana for eleven years. In 1858, he left medicine to follow a mercantile career in Iowa. In August of 1861, he was appointed an aide de camp to Governor Kirkwood. He held that position until March 14, 1862 when he was commissioned lieutenant colonel of the 17th Iowa infantry. In August of 1862, he became colonel of the regiment and led it at the beginning of the seige of Vicksburg. He resigned during the seige after distinguishing himself at the battles of Jackson and Champion's Hill. On March 13, 1865, he was awarded the commission of brevet brigadier general "for meritorious services" during the war.
