WILLIAM DEWERT DIED FROM INJURIES
Skull Was Fractured at Monroeville Tuesday Morning.

MONROEVILLE, Ind., Dec. 26- William DeWert, night fireman at the Nobles hoop factory in this city, was severly injured this morning and died at 8 o'clock this evening as a result of the accident without regaining consciousness About 5 o'clock this morning he went into the boiler room and the plug on the safety valve blew out, striking him on the temple, fracturing his skull. Mr. J.E. Whitney, who lives near the factory, heard the noise of the escaping steam and rushed across the street, where he found DeWert lying in an unconscious condition. Dr. Mentzer was called but could do little for the dying man.
DeWert surname origin: I have been looking up surnames in my family tree for the family crest. The DeWert family surname doesn't have one. Then I remembered that "de" in French means "of the". So I searched for "Wert", and then a family crest showed up! In researching the surname De Wert, there are two spellings: DeiWert, and DeWert. My great Grandfather it looks like changed his spelling from his Fathers from Dei to De. An his siblings kept the other spelling of Dei. What's interesting to note is that the Dei spelling is Italian for "of the". Wert is German in origin and means "innkeeper", and or "landlord". Who knows when the "of the" got added to the surname? But I have traced it back to the 19th century with both the spellings: Dei and De Wert.
