This is the door to the inner vault in the New Tomb at Mount Vernon. Elizabeth Parke Custis was buried here on January 7, 1832. This information comes from the Research Staff at Mount Vernon. There is no tombstone or obelisk that list Elizabeth or most of the other people buried in the inner vault.

Elizabeth Parke Custis, the oldest of Martha Dandridge Custis Washington's four surviving grandchildren. She wears a miniature portrait of an unidentified man around her neck in this 1785 painting by the English artist Robert Edge Pine. Custis was only eight years old when this portrait was made. Pine came to Mount Vernon and painted six family members—Martha Washington, her four grandchildren, and a niece—all for the price of $60.
