She was born on the 630 acre Arnold Ranch, 7 miles NW of Bozeman, MT near the East Gallatin River. Her life as a child was filled with the day in and day out activities of running a self sufficient farm. Later in her life, she enrolled in the Montana Agricultural College in Home Economics, but did not complete the course.
She spent many winters with her parents in Long Beach, CA and during one of these visits met Joseph Cush. They were married at St Anthony's Catholic Church in Long Beach on Aug 17, 1922. Their only child Joseph Terrance Cush was born in 1924.
For many years Joe and Josephine operated the Cush Decorating Company in Long Beach, specializing in parades, conventions and other large public events. At the same time Joe worked as a skilled prop man at local theaters with had vaudeville shows.
The Cushs moved to Oakland, CA in the last 1930s where Joe Sr found work in the Cavalcade Pageant of the Treasure Island Exposition in San Francisco. It was at this time that the Cushs suffered a profound personal tragedy with the death of their son in July of 1940 due to a incurable blood disease. He was only 16.
The Cushs moved back to Southern California and settled in Los Angeles, where Joe worked as a prop man for the television studios until his retirement. Josephine outlived her husband by about 3 years. They are all buried at Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles.
Compiled from the Arnold Family Book by Roberta Anderson (Josephine's niece) in 1982.
