Aaron Jay Ortega, age 30, a lifelong resident of Las Vegas, N.M., passed away on Friday, July 24, 2009 at the Alta Vista Regional Hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Las Vegas, N.M., on May 20, 1979, to Juan Ortega and Annabella Aranda-Ortega.

A lifetime Catholic, he was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas, N.M..

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents: Placido and Emalina Ortega; maternal grandparents: Jose and Antonia Aranda; Uncles: Patricio Aranda and Placido "Placic" Ortega Jr.

He is survived by his parents: Juan and Annabella Ortega of the family home in Las Vegas, N.M.; Sisters: Brenda Ortega-Benavidez husband Louie of Las Vegas, N.M., Sandra Minner husband Donzell of Aurora, Colo., Renee Rubalcaba husband Joe of Rio Rancho, N.M.; Brother: John C. Ortega girlfriend Elizabeth Vigil of Las Vegas, N.M.; goddaughter and niece: Desiree Ortega; nieces: Diane, partner Andrew Maestas, Amy Archuleta, husband Frankie, Daniela, Tatyanna, Amor, and Gavriella; nephews: Martin, Christian, Caleb, and Christopher; grand-nephew: Jovan Aaron; girlfriend Lori Pytell and special friend Shawn Benavidez; Godparents: Father George V. Salazar, Jimmy Sanchez and Pearl Sanchez; numerous: aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Born with a rare metabolic disorder and enzyme defect called Methylmelonic Acidemia (MMA) and although he suffered greatly, he had an incredible zest for life. He was lovingly cared for by his mother and family. He had a bit of a rebellious nature, but a genuine and gentle spirit. He loved to interact with people and made friends wherever he went. He had a life of several accomplished dreams and adventures, but still had plans to do such things as starting a band called Life and Death and meeting the members of the band Aerosmith.

Aaron graduated from Robertson High School in 1999. Interests included going to rock concerts, malls, comic book shops, and restaurants. He was an avid items collector. His collections included such things as jewelry, the Garbage Pail Kids cards, Super Hero dolls, movies, comics, and several television and movie series. He liked body building, heavy metal music and watching television shows such as the "700 Club" and "WrestleMania." He loved pizza and shrimp. He enjoyed hanging out with his father, his brother and his friends. He touched the lives of everyone he encountered.

Rosary devotional services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas, N.M., with Father George V. Salazar as celebrant. Interment will follow at the St. Anthony's Cemetery in Las Vegas, N.M. with the following serving as casket bearers: Louie Benavidez, Donzell Minner, Joe Rubalcaba, Christian Rubalcaba, Caleb Rubalcaba and Eric Sandoval. Honorary pallbearers: Martin Minner (in absentia serving in the Marines) and Jason Garcia.

We were blessed with our "Precious Love" for 30 wonderful years. The Ortega family would like to thank Dr. David Elliot, Alta Vista Regional Hospital and all of its employees, Father George Salazar, Father John Brasher, members of the Santo Ni o Choir, Rudy Castellano and choir, Mary Jean Padilla, Rogers Mortuary, and all of the many friends and family for their love, prayers, and support.
