There are discrepancies between the date of birth on the stone, and the available records of his life.
His birthdate should be around 1853, judging from the ages given on the census. Though an obituary printed in the Beckley Raleigh Register seems to have his birth year as 1883, that cannot be correct - an earlier article in 1934 lists him as Gideon Burchett, 81, Mabscott/ b. NC / Town District, in Names of Oldest Voters "Octogenarians in Raleigh County", one of 153 others .
JF Bailey, another Mercer county native, 81, of Prosperity, Mercer county, is included just below Gideon's name.
He was 27y in 1880 census, 47 in 1900 census, 56 in 1910 census, 65 in 1920 census,
87 in 1940 census. The 1930 census gives his age at 84, which has to be a mistake, since he was 65 in 1923 when he married Louisa.
Gideon was the son of Lawson and Elizabeth Burchett, born in Surry county, North Carolina.

Gideon married Mary Jane Taylor, daughter of John and Mary F. Hartwell Taylor in 1874, in Mercer county. In 1880 Mary and Gideon were living next door to them and close to other members of her family. In the 1900 census Mary was married for 25 years and the mother of 11 children. Gideon and Mary did not read or write.
An obituary was printed in the Beckley Raleigh Register 24th October, 1940 saying he died "yesterday", making his death, if correct, at 23rd October, 1940, and not the 18th as on the stone.
He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Hurt, of Midcity of pneumonia after an illness of one week.
It says he was born in "Carroll county, NC", 1883, a son of Lawson Burchett.*
He was a member of Missionary Baptist Church. Surviving, one sister, Mrs. Sallie Barger of Calloway Heights; 2 sons JL of Charleston and JA of Wickham, 2 daughters Mrs. Charles Taylor, Goodwill and Mrs. Frank Hurt, Midcity; 22 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren.

The county lines give both states along the escarpments of the area.
The marriage application for Gideon and Louisa in 1923 states Surry County, NC.
A brother, Gilford Lawson., was born in 1859 in Surry county, NC, also the son of Lawson and "Bettie" Smith Burchett. He married Amanda Minor Scott in Mercer county 1893, their second marriages; they are buried at Rock, Wv.
