Son of American Revolution veteran Samuel Shepherd Duval and his wife Anne Everard Bolling, who was a daughter of Archibald Duval and his wife Jane Randolph, a descendant of Pocahontas.

Dr. Duval is found in the 1870 Federal Census for Guadalupe County, living in the household of Carl and Catherine Warge. He is 70 years old, and his occuption is shown as "doctor + U.E. Minister." His birthplace is shown as Virginia.

In the "Texas Methodist Historical Quarterly" (published 1909), he is described as the "father-in-law of Rev. F. C. Wilkes and Ben E. McCullough."

His grave is marked by a Methodist Minister medallion.

"Dr. Alex. B. Duval, who was a resident of Fayetteville for several years until a year or so ago, died at Seguin, Texas, on Sunday, July 22nd, at the residence of his son-in-law, Col. McCulloch.
