Opal Barleen, daughter of Daniel Augustus and Lucy Goodell Garlow, was born October 3, 1914 southwest of Concordia in the Macyville community, and died August 22, 1995 at St. Joseph Hospital at the age of 80. She graduated from Concordia, High School and later attended Ft. Hays State University and Kansas State University. She was united in marriage to Vernon A. Barleen, August 11, 1944 at Manhattan, Ks. She lived most of her life in the Concordia community and since 1951 on a farm north of Concordia. She taught in rural schools in Cloud and Republic Counties and at McKinley School in Concordia. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Clifford Garlow, and one sister, Fern Wilson, She is survived by her husband Vernon Barleen of Concordia. two sisters, Verna Olson of Concordia, and Ila Fudge of Wichita. Services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, August 25, at the Baptist Church in Concordia with. Rev. James Autrey officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Northeast of Norway.
