Mr. Brown was a retired letter carrier, having worked at the Northampton Post Office for 30 years. Prior to his retirement in the early 1960s, he bought the former Brown's Soda Shop of Williamsburg, which he ran until 1969. He also owned and operated the former Northampton Pine Rest Nursing Home, which he and his late wife, Vivian (Campbell) Brown, ran until retiring in 1980. Mrs. Brown died in 1999. They had lived in Goshen, Williamsburg and Florence from 1930 until 1997, when they moved to East Longmeadow to be near their son, James.
Mr. Brown was a Navy veteran of WWII, serving as a Mailman First Class aboard the USS Columbus. He was a member of the Hampshire Lodge of Masons and Melha Temple Shrine. He attended Christ United Methodist Church in Northampton.
He leaves two sons, James of East Longmeadow, MA and William F. of Plainville, CT; four grandchildren, Jayme and Timothy of East Longmeadow and Stacey and Kevin of Plainville, CT; and a sister, Elva Mae of Texas. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 275 Rocky Hill Road (Rt. 66), Northampton.
Burial will be in Goshen Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours are Friday, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. only, at Pease Funeral Home, 425 Prospect St., Northampton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104. (Union-News, 22 Feb 2002)
