G. Ralph Derrick 1921 ~ 2006
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, mentor and friend, George Ralph Derrick, returned to his heavenly home December 1, 2006, after a long, courageous battle against Alzheimer's disease. Ralph is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Natter Derrick; two daughters, Suzanne (Jerold) Johnson, and Shauna (Grant) Faber; one son, Bradley Ralph (Becky) Derrick; 13 grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren.
Ralph was the son of George Alfred and Mary Lillian Derrick; and brother to Mary Baker. He was raised in Salt Lake City, where he attended West High and graduated in Electrical Engineering from the University of Utah. Ralph met the love of his life, Shirley Natter, at the university library. They were married in December of 1944, and settled in the Holladay area to raise their family. Ralph and Shirley did a lot of traveling and golfing. Ralph joined the Navy and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He accepted Commission as a Lieutenant in the reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1972. Ralph joined the Bureau of Reclamation, Department of the Interior and served as an Electrical Engineer for the design and construction branches. In all walks of life, Ralph was clearly passionate about integrity, honesty, and responsibility. His uncanny ability to take life's lessons and make sure his children learned from them makes us proud. Ralph was friendly, unassuming, kind and forgiving to those who were sincere, and always tried to do their best. He was a wonderful example of the finest qualities to possess. He had a great sense of humor and a wonderful smile. Ralph was dedicated to providing for his family, and has always been there with unconditional love and guidance. One of the most important things a father can do for his children is to love their mother, and he did, with his whole heart and soul. We are quite certain that Dad will be standing at the front door of heaven, waiting and watching for the "love of his life." The family is sincerely grateful for the loving hearts and hands of all those who were part of Ralph's life, especially Dr. Sarah Wells and the friends at Alta Ridge Care Center and Millcreek Hospice who tenderly cared for him during his illness.
Funeral services will be at 12 noon Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Dr, Salt Lake City, where friends may call Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. Graveside dedication for family and friends will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Utah Chapter, Alzheimer's Association.
