Film Director, Producer. He was a major Hollywood producer and director, known for his work on many classic films. After graduating with a degree in drama from Yale University, he started as an assistant to the head of Warner Bros. Cartoons, before becoming assistant producer at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in 1950, then moved to Paramount Pictures as a producer. He directed his first feature film, "The Sterile Cuckoo" (1969), followed by "Klute" (1971). Nominated for three Academy Awards, for Best Picture and Director, his credits include: "Fear Strikes Out" (1957), "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962), "Love with the Proper Stranger" (1963), "Inside Daisy Clover" (1965), "The Parallax View" (1974), "All the President's Men" (1976), "Comes a Horseman" (1978), "Starting Over" (1979), "Sophie's Choice" (1982), "Presumed Innocent" (1990), "The Pelican Brief" (1993) and "The Devil's Own" (1997). He was killed when a metal pipe smashed through the windshield of his Volvo station wagon and struck him in the head. He died at age 70 at the North Shore University Hospital in Plainview, Melville, Long Island, New York.
