Civil War veteran, private in 5th Regiment, Maryland Volunteer Infantry.

Joseph Zittle, son of Catherine (née Hutzle) and Peter H. Zittle, was born on 24 July 1837 in Boonsboro District, Washington County, Maryland, probably in or near Zittlestown, which his grandfather, Michael Zittle, senior, had founded in the 1810s. In 1850, Joseph Zittle was enumerated in Washington County's Sharpsburg District, where his father was then employed as a carpenter.

Joseph Zittle and Malinda Spielman were married on 3 March 1861 in Boonsboro. The groom's and bride's families had both been enumerated in 1860 in Boonsboro District. The couple had eight children. The names and birth dates of five were recorded in Malinda's Bible; four lived to maturity.*

Joseph Zittle enlisted as a private for one year's service on 1 November 1864 in Frederick, Maryland, and was mustered in that day in Company G, 5th Regiment, Maryland Volunteer Infantry, which was then engaged in the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia. According to his enlistment papers, he was age 25, a laborer born in Washington County, Maryland; he was 5 feet, 4 inches tall; had blue eyes, brown hair, and a fair complexion. During Private Zittle's months of service, the 5th Maryland participated in: Battle of Hatcher's Run, 5-7 February 1865, a Union victory; and the Battle of Appomattox Court House, 9 April 1865, resulting in the surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. The 5th Maryland mustered out of service on 1 September 1865; Private Joseph Zittle was discharged 6 days later.

Joseph Zittle and family were enumerated in 1870 in Boonsboro District. He was a day laborer. In 1880, he and his family were enumerated in Morgan County, West Virginia, where he was a farmer. By 1890 Joseph and Malinda Zittle had moved to Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland.

Joseph Zittle filed for an invalid's pension on 4 June 1890; his pension card showing his service in "G 5 Md. Inf." He encountered some difficulty in being awarded his pension. His absences from his company in August 1865 for medical treatment were at first mistaken for desertion. (In some military records his name was written as "Little.")

Joseph and Malinda Zittle were enumerated in 1900 in Hagerstown. Then age 62, his occupation was pensioner. Malinda died in 1903 in Hagerstown. He died 4½ years later on 24 August 1907 in Boonsboro, where he was boarding after visiting his children.
