Lieutenant Colonel David J. Maloney, United States Air Force (Retired) 85 years of age, of 15365 Norwood Ave., Blue Ridge Summit, PA. Mr. Maloney was born September 29, 1916 in Philadelphia PA, the son of James and Catherine (Thomas) Maloney of Linwood, PA. He lived during his elementary school years in Boothwyn and Linwood, PA. While attending Chester High School, he participated in the Athletic, History and Art Clubs and graduated in 1933. He worked as a farm laborer taking night courses in History and Art through the National Youth Agency at Drexel Institute in Philadelphia until 1935. He "outgrew" the job and sought employment at Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone, PA. In 1942, Maloney enlisted in the U.S. Army taking Basic Training at Fort Eustis, GA, followed by Officer Candidate School in 1943, graduating as 1st Lt . with principle duty as Company Motor Maintenance Officer, 845th AA Battalion, Camp Stewart, GA in 1944. In 1945 he was assigned to the 3979th Quartermaster Black Enlisted Men Truck Company, Camp Gordon, GA for a tour of duty in the European Theater at Delta Base, Marseilles, France. Their duty was to transport drums of oil to depots in France and Germany during World War II. During this time he met Army nurse Dorothy "Jane" Zeltinger - his wife to be. She was waiting in a Nurses "pool" for assignment to the Pacific Theater. After "V-E'' Day, Maloney returned stateside to await discharge. David and Jane (now his wife of more than 54 years) were married at Fitzsimmons General Hospital Chapel, Denver, Colorado on March 7, 1946.
Having been honorably discharged, at war's end joined the U.S. Army Reserves, while again seeking employment with Baldwin Locomotive Works. Soon, however, he was recalled to military service in 1947 and was assigned to Headquarters 9th Air Force as Motor Vehicle Officer with 316th Airdrome Group, Aircraft Carrier at Greenville, SC. In 1948 he was ordered to the 347th Fighter Bomber Wing, Bofu, Japan and the 49th Fighter Bomber Wing, Misawa, Japan where he was joined by his family early in 1949. In 1951, he was assigned to 6154th Air Base Group, Seoul Korea for joint support service. Maloney was assigned to 306th Motor Vehicle Squadron MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, FL in 1952 and spent 4 months of 1953 in the United Kingdom in support duty. He received education at Florida Southern University toward a BS degree, and attended a military school to take a Photo-Radar Target Bombing Interpretation Course. In 1956, he was assigned to Intelligence Staff of Strategic Air Command at Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, NE where he took courses in Nuclear Weaponry and Bomb Damage Photo-Radar Analysis of flight mission targets. In 1960 he was assigned to Alaskan J-2 Command, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage, AK as Intelligence Photo-Radar Officer, Chief of Operations and, in 1963, as Chief of Operations of Intelligence Branch ALCOM. In 1964 he was assigned to the Intelligence Staff Office as Air Target Officer, Defense Agency Group, Alternate National Military Defense Command (ANMCC) at Site R, Fort Ritchie, MD. In 1968/69 during the Vietnam War, Maloney was assigned temporary duty to the Wing Chief Support Division as Director of Intelligence, Task Force Alpha, Nakhon Phanom, Thailand. Maloney was assigned to Pentagon TDY in November 1969 with the 1133rd Air Force, Special Activity Squadron, as Defense Intelligence Staff Officer. He remained with that group at Site R, Fort Ritchie, MD from 1970 until his retirement in 1972 after 30 years of military service. During his career he was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, American campaign Medal, Euro-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, United Nations Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal, among others awards and citations.
During his years in the military, he worked with the Boy Scouts and Air Explorer Scouts, and he was a member of Carolina Motor Club and the Nebraska Mineralogical (Rock Hound) Club. During retirement Maloney maintained various interests. He obtained a Real Estate License and practiced in the Blue Ridge Summit, PA area; he set up a dental lab for a clinic in Gettysburg, PA; he worked in a denture lab; he delivered Meals on Wheels; he constructed storage buildings on his property, providing summer jobs for local teenage boys; he enjoyed many crafts such as automotive repair; rebuilding player pianos, ceramics, and stained glass; he collected many "treasures" at local auctions.
Lt. Col. Maloney attended St. Rita's Catholic Church, Blue Ridge Summit, PA. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Katherine Vogel of Gaithersburg, MD, Leah Tove of Asheville, NC, Karen Hodges of Hagerstown, MD, Tara Drake of Sandwich, MA, and Lisa Williams of Hoover, AL and two sons, David J. Maloney, Jr., of Frederick, MD and Brian P. Maloney of Phoenixville, PA. He is also survived by a sister, Anna Marie Mahon of Chester, PA, a brother, Joseph Maloney of Arnold, PA, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Lt. Col. Maloney was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Thomas and Martin, and by two sisters, Katherine and Margaret.

In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving a tour of duty in the European Theater at Delta Base, Marseilles, France, during World War II. After being discharged, he joined the U.S. Army Reserves and was recalled to military service in 1947. He served in locations in the United States and overseas. He retired in 1972 after 30 years of military service. During his career, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Euro-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, United Nations Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal and the Joint Service Commendation Medal, among other awards and citations.
After retiring, he obtained a real estate license and practiced in the Blue Ridge Summit area. He later earned a dental technician's license, working at a dental office in Gettysburg. He attended St. Rita's Catholic Church, Blue Ridge Summit.
Surviving also are five daughters, Katherine L. Vogel of Gaithersburg, Md., Leah M. Tove of Asheville, N.C., Karen A. Hodges of Hagerstown, Tara L. Drake of Sandwich, Mass., and Lisa M. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fairfield. A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Monahan Funeral Home, 27 E. Main St., Fairfield.

He worked as a farm laborer taking night courses in History and Art through the National Youth Agency at Drexel Institute in Philadelphia until 1935. He "outgrew" the job and sought employment at Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone, PA. In 1942, Maloney enlisted in the U.S. Army taking Basic Training at Fort Eustis, GA, followed by Officer Candidate School in 1943, graduating as 1st Lt . with principle duty as Company Motor Maintenance Officer, 845th AA Battalion, Camp Stewart, GA in 1944. In 1945 he was assigned to the 3979th Quartermaster Black Enlisted Men Truck Company, Camp Gordon, GA for a tour of duty in the European Theater at Delta Base, Marseilles, France. Their duty was to transport drums of oil to depots in France and Germany during World War II. During this time he met Army nurse Dorothy "Jane" Zeltinger - his wife to be. She was waiting in a Nurses "pool" for assignment to the Pacific Theater. After "V-E'' Day, Maloney returned stateside to await discharge. David and Jane (now his wife of more than 54 years) were married at Fitzsimmons General Hospital Chapel, Denver, Colorado on March 7, 1946.
Having been honorably discharged, at war's end joined the U.S. Army Reserves, while again seeking employment with Baldwin Locomotive Works. Soon, however, he was recalled to military service in 1947 and was assigned to Headquarters 9th Air Force as Motor Vehicle Officer with 316th Airdrome Group, Aircraft Carrier at Greenville, SC. In 1948 he was ordered to the 347th Fighter Bomber Wing, Bofu, Japan and the 49th Fighter Bomber Wing, Misawa, Japan where he was joined by his family early in 1949. In 1951, he was assigned to 6154th Air Base Group, Seoul Korea for joint support service. Maloney was assigned to 306th Motor Vehicle Squadron MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, FL in 1952 and spent 4 months of 1953 in the United Kingdom in support duty. He received education at Florida Southern University toward a BS degree, and attended a military school to take a Photo-Radar Target Bombing Interpretation Course. In 1956, he was assigned to Intelligence Staff of Strategic Air Command at Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, NE where he took courses in Nuclear Weaponry and Bomb Damage Photo-Radar Analysis of flight mission targets. In 1960 he was assigned to Alaskan J-2 Command, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage, AK as Intelligence Photo-Radar Officer, Chief of Operations and, in 1963, as Chief of Operations of Intelligence Branch ALCOM. In 1964 he was assigned to the Intelligence Staff Office as Air Target Officer, Defense Agency Group, Alternate National Military Defense Command (ANMCC) at Site R, Fort Ritchie, MD. In 1968/69 during the Vietnam War, Maloney was assigned temporary duty to the Wing Chief Support Division as Director of Intelligence, Task Force Alpha, Nakhon Phanom, Thailand. Maloney was assigned to Pentagon TDY in November 1969 with the 1133rd Air Force, Special Activity Squadron, as Defense Intelligence Staff Officer. He remained with that group at Site R, Fort Ritchie, MD from 1970 until his retirement in 1972 after 30 years of military service. During his career he was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, American campaign Medal, Euro-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, United Nations Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal, among others awards and citations.
During his years in the military, he worked with the Boy Scouts and Air Explorer Scouts, and he was a member of Carolina Motor Club and the Nebraska Mineralogical (Rock Hound) Club. During retirement Maloney maintained various interests. He obtained a Real Estate License and practiced in the Blue Ridge Summit, PA area; he set up a dental lab for a clinic in Gettysburg, PA; he worked in a denture lab; he delivered Meals on Wheels; he constructed storage buildings on his property, providing summer jobs for local teenage boys; he enjoyed many crafts such as automotive repair; rebuilding player pianos, ceramics, and stained glass; he collected many "treasures" at local auctions.
Lt. Col. Maloney attended St. Rita's Catholic Church, Blue Ridge Summit, PA. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Katherine Vogel of Gaithersburg, MD, Leah Tove of Asheville, NC, Karen Hodges of Hagerstown, MD, Tara Drake of Sandwich, MA, and Lisa Williams of Hoover, AL and two sons, David J. Maloney, Jr., of Frederick, MD and Brian P. Maloney of Phoenixville, PA. He is also survived by a sister, Anna Marie Mahon of Chester, PA, a brother, Joseph Maloney of Arnold, PA, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Lt. Col. Maloney was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Thomas and Martin, and by two sisters, Katherine and Margaret.

David J. Maloney, 85, of 15365 Norwood Ave., Blue Ridge Summit, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, in Avalon Manor Nursing Home in Hagerstown, Md.
He was the husband of Dorothy "Jane" Zeltinger, his wife of more than 54 years. Born Sept. 29, 1916, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late James and Catherine (Thomas) Maloney of Linwood, Pa.
In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving a tour of duty in the European Theater at Delta Base, Marseilles, France, during World War II. After being discharged, he joined the U.S. Army Reserves and was recalled to military service in 1947. He served in locations in the United States and overseas. He retired in 1972 after 30 years of military service. During his career, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Euro-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, United Nations Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal and the Joint Service Commendation Medal, among other awards and citations.
After retiring, he obtained a real estate license and practiced in the Blue Ridge Summit area. He later earned a dental technician's license, working at a dental office in Gettysburg. He attended St. Rita's Catholic Church, Blue Ridge Summit.
Surviving also are five daughters, Katherine L. Vogel of Gaithersburg, Md., Leah M. Tove of Asheville, N.C., Karen A. Hodges of Hagerstown, Tara L. Drake of Sandwich, Mass., and Lisa M. Williams of Hoover, Ala.; two sons, David J. Maloney Jr. of Frederick, Md., and Brian P. Maloney of Phoenixville; a sister, Anna Marie Mahon of Chester; a brother, Joseph Maloney of Arnold; 26 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Thomas and Martin Maloney and two sisters, Katherine and Margaret Maloney, as well as a grandson, Shane P. Maloney.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday from St. Rita's Catholic Church in Blue Ridge Summit. The Rev. Sigfrido Troche will celebrate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fairfield. A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Monahan Funeral Home, 27 E. Main St., Fairfield.
