Composer. Having studied music as a child, he played trumpet in military bands from the age of 14. In 1839 he heard a Viennese orchestra play music by Strauss and Lanner, and from then on he composed a large quantity of attractive dance music (waltzes, polkas, mazurkas, galops) and marches which earned him the nickname "The Strauss of the North". His most famous work is the "Champagne Galop". At the same time he provided music to some of August Bournonville's most popular ballets, including "Napoli" and "Conservatory". From 1843 to 1872 he served as the music director of the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, often leading the orchestra from the violin. He took them on several European tours and performed in Paris, St. Petersburg, Berlin and Vienna, where he made friends with Johann Strauss, Sr. In 1872 increasing deafness forced Lumbye to give up his career as a musician. A series of a dozen CDs of all his orchestral works document his great versatility as a composer.
