Eli's Civil War service is summarized in Vol. 39, "Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War 1861 - 1865", Michigan Legislature, p. 67: "McGowan, Eli D., California. Enlisted in company I, Ninth Cavalry, as Sergeant, Dec 1, 1862, at California, for 3 years, age 28. Mustered Jan 22, 1863. discharged to accept commission in First U. S. Colored Heavy Artillery, June 24, 1864. Junior First Lieutenant in First U. S. Heavy Artillery. Mustered at Knoxville, Tenn., July 25, 1864. Discharged at Chattanooga, Tenn., March 31, 1866." Family narrative adds that he was stationed at Coldwater Michigan as a recruiting officer.
Eli's service record and pension file at the National Archives shows that he was mustered in at Coldwater, Michigan. The captain in the Ninth Cavalry was his brother, Jonas Hartzell McGowan, commissioned on 4 Dec 1862, so it is no coincidence that Eli enlisted to serve in the company with his brother. Soon after Jonas was discharged due to an injury, Eli resigned from the Ninth Cavalry so that he could reenlist to serve as Regimental Quartermaster for another brother, Col. John E. McGowan, in the First U. S. Colored Heavy Artillery.
