Irish Revolutionary. He began his career as a clerk and stockbroker in London. Joined the Republican Brotherhood, of which he eventually became a member of the supreme Council. Fought in the Easter Rising of 1916. Minister for Home Affairs in 1918 and for finance from 1919 to 1922. He also head of Intelligence during Anglo-Irish War, raising money and organised arms supplies. One of the principal negotiators of the Anglo-Irish treaty. Commander in Chief of the Irish Government Forces during the subsequent Irish Civil War. Died in action at Bealnablath in County Cork when his column was ambushed by anti-government forces. A movie was made about his life titled "Michael Collins" (1996) directed by Neil Jordan and starring Liam Neeson in the title role.
