He was born about 1766 based on his age in a petition to distribute his father's estate in 1780. He was the son of Johan William Gross Sr. and Susannah Zimmerman. He was a farmer and operator of a pottery works and tannery. He married Margaretha Maria Staudt about 1800 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. He died before 30 May 1821 in Maxatawny Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
