BESSIE ORLENA WATSON COLWELL
..Bessie O. Watson Colwell, 85, Yellow Jacket, died at the Vista Grande Nursing Home, Cortez, September 28, 1988. She was born at Bronson, Kansas, on September 10, 1903, the daughter of David E. and Eva Ellanora Watson.
..She lived in the Bronson area and taught school prior to her marriage in 1921 to John Park Colwell, the son of Lewis V. Colwell and Dena L. Manely Colwell. To this union two daughters were born: Lois I. Ives of Yellow Jacket and Betty R. Oakley of Roseville, Calif.
..In 1937, the family moved from Kansas to a ranch near Yellow Jacket where she cared for the home and became active in community affairs. She began teaching again and in the early 1950s she enrolled in Adams State Teaches College at Alamosa for additional education. Following that,she resumed teaching in the Bayfield/Ignacio area. She was an artist of oil and pastel paintings, leatherwork and ceramics.
..In 1945 the family bought a ranch on Texas Creek, north of Bayfield, where they lived for 23 years. In 1968 they moved back to the Yellow Jacket community where she joined the Arriola Baptist Church. She was later baptized there. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors of America for 64 years.
..She leaves behind her daughters; one sister, Ruth Donoho, of Saco, Montana; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband, two brothers, and one sister preceded her in death.
..Funeral services were held at Ertel Funeral Home Sat. 2 p.m., Oct. 1, with interment at the Fairview Cemetery at Yellow Jacket.
