Actress. Born Madeline Angela Clinton-Baddeley. She was the older sister of Hermione Baddeley. Angela was best remembered for her role as Mrs. Bridges in the period drama "Upstairs, Downstairs." (1971 to 1975) She had a long and distinguished career on stage that lasted for 63 years. In 1912, at age 8, she made her stage debut in London in a play called "The Dawn of Happiness." She auditioned at the Old Vic Theatre in 1915 at the age of 9, making her stage debut in "Richard III" and appearing in many other Shakespeare plays. During her teenage years, she starred in many musicals and pantomimes. Baddeley spent some time touring Australia and succeeded in establishing herself as one of the most popular actresses of her day. In 1931, she appeared in the Sherlock Holmes tale "The Speckled Band," featuring Raymond Massey as the sleuth, and in the screen version of the hit stage thriller "The Ghost Train." Throughout the 1940s, she played many strong female roles on stage. Continuing to act on stage in her later years, she played the bawd in "Pericles, Prince of Tyre" at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in 1958. She was installed as Commander, Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1975 for services to the theatre. Baddeley died of pneumonia at the age of 71.
