Guy A. Leader Jr., 83, of Manchester Township, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at his residence. He was the husband of Virginia (Curry) Leader. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Dec. 30.
Mr. Leader was born in York Township on Dec. 17, 1919. He was the son of the late Guy A. and Beulah (Boyer) Leader, Sr.
He was a 1938 graduate of William Penn Senior High, and received a bachelor's degree from Penn State University, majoring in poultry husbandry. Upon graduation from college, he joined his father, Guy A. Leader, in the management of Leader farms, located in York Township, which operated a poultry farm and hatchery.
Leader Leghorns were a nationally recognized breed of white leghorns for the production of eggs for more than three decades. A 386- acre farm, located in Shrewsbury Township, was added during the 1940s and 1950s. After developing an outstanding herd of black angus cattle on that farm, and the sale of the herd of Kresge's stores, a new undertaking involved the building of a herd of Guernsey cattle of more than 150 head, which became a leader among such herds in the United States for production of milk.
Beginning in 1974, he owned and operated a hatchery business in York Township, which produced 12 million baby chicks annually, until his retirement in 1987.
Mr. Leader was elected to the Board of Directors of Southern York County School District, serving 12 years, including a period as president of the board. He served as a member of the Shrewsbury Water Authority and was a member of the Bon Air Country Club and served as member of the board. He was also a member of The Penn State Nittany Lions Club and Penn State Alumni Association.
Mr. Leader is survived by his children, Susan C. Leader of San Leon, Texas, Guy A. Leader, III of Ephrata, Lida L. Yocum of Plantation, Fla., Amy J. Leader of Harrisburg; four grandchildren, Lindsey and Meredith Yocum and Emily and Mindy Leader; two brothers, Gov. George M. Leader of Hershey and Henry B. Leader of York; two sisters, Mary Leader Hovis of York and Jean L. Eisenhart of Hanover; and nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Paul H. Leader, and a sister, Lois Leader Collins.
His funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory Inc. 1551 Kenneth Road, York. Officiating will be pastor Craig Newton, VNA Hospice chaplain. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
