Harriet N. Mack was the daughter of Col. Stephen Mack and Temperance Bond. Col. Mack was the founder of Pontiac, Michigan.

Her first cousin was the Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith.

Harriet married Lt. Rufus Hatch on August 26, 1818, in Norwich, Vermont. Rufus Hatch died in 1825 while in charge of the lighthouse at Ft. Gratiot. They had two children:

* Henry Stephen Hatch (1821-1876).
* Harriet Frances Hatch (1820-1866). Married Abram B. Mathews 12 Sept. 1838.

On February 13, 1828 Harriet married Gideon O. Whittemore in Pontiac. Together they had a least five children. In addition, they adopted several children.

Mrs. Whittemore survived her husband by five years, dying at Tawas City in 1872.
