Believe to be the son of Albert Stevens of Chittenden Co., town of Essex in Vermont. His birth year is found anywhere from 1819 to 1829 in the censuses taken during the course of his life. He was mixed race Native American (believed to be Abenaki) and white.
His occupation was a stevedore. He married Annie Walker (immigrant from Ireland) around 1851. Together they had a total of 10 children, 3 of them dying at young ages. Their childrens names were: Anne M. (b.abt. 1851), Kate E. (b.abt. 1853), Josephine E. (b.abt. 1856), Thomas F. (b.abt. 1858), Emma Mary (b.abt. 1860, d.1862), William John (b. 1862), Elmer Ellsworth (b. Feb. 1864, d. 5 mos. later), Joseph G. (b. 1865), Joseph H.G. (b. May 1866, d. July 1867). There is one other child, name and birth/death dates unknown. Their last name is also found spelled STEPHENS.
According to a Philadelphia death certificate, Joseph G. Stevens died July 26, 1872 of drowning and was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pa.
It is believed that his remains were moved to the Lawnview Memorial Park Cemetery in Rockledge, Pa. during the 1950's.
