US Navy Veteran. His mother was Inez O. (nee Sox) Glenn, and in 1890, they were living in the house of his maternal grandfather. There is no indication of where his father was, or if the mother were divorced, widowed, or just separated temporarily. Subsequent census records (1910 to 1920) indicate that his mother remained in the household of her father, Edward Sox.

During World War I, he served in the Aviation Division of the US Navy, achieving the rank of Carperters Mate, 2nd Class (CM2). After the war, he joined the American Legion, and would work at odd jobs as a carpenter. On July 12, 1920, he married an Austrian immigrant, Elizabeth Schauer, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, when they met at the same boarding house. They would have three children: Jack Harold Glenn, Helen (Mrs. O.F. Foreman of Anchorage, Alaska), and Ruth (Mrs James Lovett, of Vienna, Austria). In 1930 he was the division manager for a company selling vacuum cleaners and sweapers, in Michigan. Shortly afterwards, they moved to Bay City, Texas, where he lived for the remainder of his life. His only son, Jack, became a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Air Force during World War II, and was killed in action in 1944. Following cremation, Verner was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia on April 21, 1959.
