Death Claims Mrs. Porter
Pioneer Family Loses Member
Mrs. Johnson Porter, 66, of 4215 S.W. Corbett avenue, daughter of the late United State Senator Joseph Norton Dolph, died on Wednesday afternoon of a heart attack following a long illness with diabetes. She was the granddaughter of Johnson Mulkey, Oregon pioneer.
Born Ruth Dolph, she was educated in Portland and Washington D. C. She first married Anthony Thornton, son of the chief justice of Illinois state supreme court. Her second marriage was to Johnson Porter.
While a student in the east, Mrs. Porter, then Ruth Dolph, was invited by the navy to assist in the christening of the battleship Oregon at launching ceremonies in San Francisco October 26, 1893. Because of illness she was unable to attend.
Long Resident of Europe
While a young woman she was presented at the court of King Leopold in Brussels. She lived in London and other European cities for many years, where she rendered assistance to many Oregonians who were traveling. She later established residence in Corvallis, but moved to Portland, the place of her birth, two years ago.
Survivors include two sons, Anthony Thornton, United States marines, and Norton Dolph Thornton, Palo Alto; two brothers, Henry Villard Dolph and Colonel Cyrus A. Dolph of Portland, and a brother-in-law. Richard Nixon, who resided in Paris when last heard from, before France fell.
Services, which have not yet been scheduled, will be directed by J. P. Finley & Son.
