His father was gravely wounded on Malvern Hill during the Civil War, and for that he was named. In childhood, he and his father collected bird's eggs.

West Point Class of 1886.

At the battle of San Juan Hill, was shot through the hip, exactly 36 years after his father was shot through the hip. He recovered and contracted typhoid. He recovered from that as well and went on to serve in France in WW1.
