Major League Baseball Player. Born Chester Peter Laabs, he was an outfielder for three teams in eleven years in the majors. He played with the Detroit Tigers (1937 to 1939), St. Louis Browns (1939 to 1946), and finished with the Philadelphia Athletics (1947). In 3,102 plate appearances he batted .262 with 509 runs batted in and 117 home runs. In 1942 he finished second in the American League in home runs with 27 behind Ted Williams, who had 36. Laabs was an All-Star in 1943 and helped the Browns win the American League pennant in 1944 by hitting two home runs against the Yankees on the final day of the season. The Browns lost the series in six games against their cross-town rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals.
