EAST LIVERPOOL - Betty Jean Hager, 83, of Duke Road, Calcutta, died Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at 11:18 p.m. at the East Liverpool City Hospital.

Born in Garrett, Pa., September 6, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Alda Zerfoss.

She graduated from Berlin Brothersvalley High School in 1944 and later graduated from the Allegheny General Hospital nursing program in Cumberland, Md. A registered nurse, she worked at the East Liverpool City Hospital and was a member of the Sacred Heart Hospital Nurses Alumni Association.

A member of the Boyce United Methodist Church, she was active in its Home Builders Class, Mary Ester Circle and the Women's Missionary Society. She also taught Sunday school and volunteered in the nursery. She enjoyed worshipping God, reading, working outdoors, gardening and crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her husband Clark W. Hager on Feb. 10, 2003. The couple married June 18, 1948. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Yoder and Patty Custer; and three brothers, Pete, Clyde and Bill Zerfoss

Survivors include four daughters, Linda K. Burcham, and her husband David, of Boardman, Deborah Hager of Calcutta, Mary Lou Hager of Lisbon, and Lisa Hager of Columbus; along with a stepson, Clark W. Hager Jr., and his wife Joanne of Florida

Four sisters survive, Mary Garland, Sally Krepelka, Susan Snyder and Nancy Rubright; and three brothers, Charles, Toot and Butch Zerfoss.

There are six grandchildren: Michael Giambroni, and his wife Shannon, of Midland, Brent Burcham, and his wife Beth, of Chicago, Danielle Giambroni, and her fiance Mike Helay, of Pittsburgh, Brandi Hogan, and her husband Patrick, of Kinzers, Pa., Josh Giambroni of Virginia, and Josie Ann Smith of Columbus; and five great-grandchildren: Andrew and Giada Giambroni, Madelyn and Elijah Burcham, and Cory Hogan.

Friends may call Monday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. The Rev. Rick Dawson of the church will conduct a funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell.

Following the service, family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship and remembrance.

Memorial tributes may take the form of contributions to Boyce United Methodist Church, in care of Youth Ministries, Anna Avenue, East Liverpool.
