John A. Gilmer, Jr., as he was called, though his and his father's middle names were different, attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and was graduated in 1858. While at UNC, John was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, and the Dialectic Society. He became a lawyer in Greensboro.
John enlisted in Co. B, "The Guilford Greys," of the 27th NC Regiment, Confederate States Army on 20 April 1861, as a Lieutenant. He was promoted to the rank of Adjutant in Nov. 1861, Major on 6 Jan. 1862, Lieutenant Colonel on 1 Nov. 1862, and full Colonel on 5 Dec. 1862. He was badly wounded in the knee at Fredericksburg,Va. 13 Dec. 1862, and again at Bristoe Station, 14 Oct. 1863. He then became the commandant of the Salisbury prisoner of war camp.
On 14 July 1864, John A. Gilmer married Sarah Amelia "Sallie" Lindsay (1839-1920). She was the younger daughter of Jesse Harper Lindsay (1808-1886), a prominent man in Greensboro, and his wife Amelia Gazeal Ellison (1816-1881). Sallie was known as the "belle of Greensboro" in those days. After the War, John resumed the practice of law, and later went on to become a State Legislator, and ended up a Justice in the North Carolina Supreme Court. He also served as an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. John was quite promient and well respected in Greensboro, and all over North Carolina, as well.
John and Sallie had three children: Colonel Ellison Linday Gilmer (1866-1932, m. May Davis Hopkins), Julia Paisley Gilmer (1869-1903, Mrs. Samuel W. Dick) and John Arthur Gilmer (1872-1940, m. Emma Jones).
