Mr. John Kinch, aged 72, who left Carleton Place about twenty-five years ago for Michigan, died of pneumonia on the 4th at Redman, in that state. When 25 years of age, a Michigan paper says Mr. Kinch crossed the plains to California in search of gold. His party suffered extremely and many died but Mr. Kinch survived all. By his amazing courage and persistent will, he travelled ten days subsisting wholly on nothing but rosebuds. Overcoming all obstacles, his hopes were crowned with success. Having accumulated a fortune of some $40,000 in California gold in eight years of privation and self denial, he returned to his native home to enjoy the fruits of his labors. He entered a mercantile business at Carleton Place, which venture ended, after about ten years, in the almost complete loss of Mr. Kinch's handsome fortune, he having been most unfortunate in the partnership he had entered into. Disheartened but not subdued, Mr. Kinch moved his family to Texas for a short time, then he removed to the wilds of Michigan where he bought a farm in the then wilds of Bloomfield. He cleared away almost impregnable forest and the spot is now a beautiful farm. Like many others, he saw his home go to ashes in the 1881 fire.
