In 1870, he defeated Tom Allen for the Heavyweight Championship of America. After his boxing career, he traveled the world teaching boxing and conducting tournaments. He is known by some as the "Father of Modern Boxing", and it has been said that he had the greatest influence on boxing in the pre-1900 era. He was instrumental in the increase in popularity of glove boxing. He was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1954 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
