John Thornton "Tony" Gilmer, for four years prosecuting attorney of Adams county and one of the best known criminal lawyers in this city and vicinity, died last night at 9:40 o'clock at his home, 1338 North Ninth street, following the third paralytic stroke suffered since last March. Although his friends in this city realized that his health was greatly impaired, his passing comes as a surprise, as only yesterday he was seen on the streets. He received the first stroke early in March and the second one last Friday evening. He partly recovered from the last stroke, being able to walk about town. At 6:15 o'clock last night he was stricken with the fatal stroke which caused his death three hours later. "Tony" Gilmer was born in Coatsburg, Ill., July l6, 1867 and this city when he was 19 years old, entering Chaddock college. Soon after, however, he left this school, and began to study law in the office of his uncle, C. M. Gilmer. He made rapid advancement and was later admitted to the bar. In 1908 he was elected prosecuting attorney of this county, serving in this capacity until 1912, when he was defeated for re-election by Fred Wolfe, the present incumbent. In 1888 he was married to Miss Rosana Crippen in Camp Point, who died In November 1898. In 1900 he was married to Miss Lora Horens in this city, who survives and there are also two sons,: John Thornton, Jr., of Montana; Wilkes B, at home; two daughters, Mrs.. Harry Peterson, of Wataga, Ill., .Miss Thorna, at home; three sisters, Mrs. G. A. Harmon, of Dallas, Tex., Miss Lucy Gilmer of. Seattle, Wash., and Miss Clara Gilmer, a teacher in the Philippine Islands. He was a member of the St John's Cathedral, local aerie of Eagles and the Red Cross lodge, Knights of Pythlas.
