James E. "Jim" Moore, 83, of Port Lavaca passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009. He was born on Oct. 17, 1926 in Tyler to Sterling Moore and Mary Alline Tomberlain.
Raised in Smith County, he graduated from Tyler High School where he lettered in football. At 19 he enlisted in the Navy during World War II and served in the Philippians and Japan. After serving his country he attended East Texas State College where he lettered in both football and baseball. He attended Henderson County Junior College for two years where he was All Conference in football and set a record for longest punt of 96 yards. Jim earned his Bachelor's degree in Education at the University of Houston where he also lettered in both football and baseball, and earned his Master's degree at South Texas State University.
In 1951 he came to Calhoun County where he taught school and coached until 1953 at Port Lavaca High School. From 1953 - 1956 he taught school and coached successful basketball and football teams at Sundeen High School in Corpus Christi. In the years of 1956 through 1960 he coached basketball at Llano High School where he led his basketball team to the State Finals finishing 3rd in the state, and was given the job of High School Principal there from 1958 to 1960. In 1960 he moved his family south to Port Lavaca where he took both a teaching and a coaching job at Crockett Jr. High. He was transferred to Calhoun High School as assistant principal and then promoted to principal in 1967 where he presented two decades of Calhoun graduates their diplomas before retiring in 1987. Mr. Moore served as high school principal longer than any other in the district's history.
He loved, and remained active in, several types of sports throughout his life. He played semi-pro baseball for the Victoria Rosebuds as pitcher, peddled through many miles and marathons on his bicycle where he made headline news locally for riding 58,000 miles in Calhoun County. With two hole-in-one trophies, he had a passion for golf in which he was often praised in print for being a consistent long drive hitter. He loved football and basketball, both collegiate and pro but when it came to high school football, the Calhoun Sandcrabs were his team and he rarely missed a game. He was especially proud of the boys on the 2006 team that broke the years of hard times on the grid iron to give his Sandcrabs their first District title since 1961.
He loved to travel and visited places all over the world after his retirement with his best girl.
Jim was a faithful member of the Church of Christ where he taught Bible class and served as both a deacon and an elder. He was a man who exemplified good morals and Christian values throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anita Rhae Banks Moore; daughters, Sheryl Lynn Moore Cuellar and husband Jay Cuellar, Michon Moore Hemenway and husband Thomas Hemenway, and Lina Janette Moore; grandchildren, Jeffery Mark Foreman II, Jacqulin Nicole Foreman Grissom and husband Joshua Grissom, Taylor Eason Baker, Jonathan Earl Barrier, Timothy James Moore, Evan Edward Mutchler, Ethan Paul Cuellar, and Elaina Diane Cuellar; and four great-grandchildren; sisters, Arlene Moore Hall and husband Ross Hall of Lindale, Arvalene Moore Brown and husband Ray Brown of Wolfe City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gary Moore.
